Red, blue and yellow compositions

Piet Mondrian
is a Dutch painter of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Along with Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich, he is considered one of the first painters to create full-scale abstract paintings.
In his early years, he painted landscapes and trees, but eventually shifted to full abstraction. In his famous series of "Apple Trees," we can see the process of simplifying the form of the trees and moving toward complete abstraction. This style is in stark contrast to Kandinsky's "hot abstraction," which is in the Expressionist vein, and is called "cold abstraction. He is best known for his series of works that adhere to the stoic principle of using only three primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) on a canvas divided only by horizontal and vertical lines.
