Toichi Kato was born in 1916 in Bidono-cho, Gifu City, the fifth son of Umetaro and Tame Kato, lacquer ware merchants. His elder brother is Eizo Kato, a Japanese-style painter.
1947 Graduated from the Department of Japanese Painting at Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music). Exhibited "Hakugure" at the 3rd Nitten for the first time and was selected for the first time.
Studied under Yamaguchi Yohshun in 1948.
1952 Awarded a special prize at the 8th Nitten for his work "Kusahara".
1955 Won a special prize and the Hakuju Prize for "Sand Dunes" at the 11th Nitten.
Moved to Kugenuma, Fujisawa City in 1969.
1970 Awarded the Prime Minister's Prize for "Zanshou no Hama" at the 2nd Nitten.
1977: Awarded the Japan Art Academy Prize for "Onna-Jin" (Woman), which was exhibited at the previous year's Nitten.
In 1984, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy.
In 1989, he became the chairman of Nitten.
In 1991, he received the first Gifu Citizen's Honor Award.
1993 Completed the paintings for the Grand Drawing Room of Rokuon-ji Temple (Kinkakuji Temple).
In 1995, he was awarded the Cultural Merit Award.
In 1996, he became an honorary citizen of Gifu City.
Died of pneumonia in 1996 at the age of 80. He was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, second class.
He became an honorary citizen of Fujisawa City in 1997.
