Career highlights


Early Period: Began working before World War II. Initially, his works were influenced by Surrealism (surrealism).
Postwar: Became a pioneer of abstract painting in Japan. Participated in the founding of the “Jiyu Bijutsuka Kyokai” (Japan Association of Independent Liberal Arts) and was a core member.
Style: His paintings are characterized by organic forms full of life and rich, poetic colors. He is also known for his titles reminiscent of music and literature, such as “Symphony” and "Dialogue.
Late life: Even after the premature death of his son Fumio Nambada, who was also a painter, he continued to create as if in dialogue with his works, and remained active throughout his life until his death at the age of 92.
He was a pioneer in the postwar Japanese art world in establishing his own unique abstract paintings rich in poetic sentiment, and is highly regarded as one of Japan's leading lyrical abstract painters.
