Somei Yuki

Yuki Somei (1875-1957) was a Japanese painter active from the Meiji through to the Showa periods. He studied under Kawabata Gyokusho and others at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts).

・Emphasis on sketching: While inheriting traditional Japanese painting techniques, he placed great importance on "sketching," capturing nature as it is.

・Innovative activities: Together with Kaburagi Kiyokata and others, he founded the Kinreisha group, pursuing a new era of Japanese painting unconstrained by conventional conventions.

Achievements as an educator: He served as a professor at his alma mater, Tokyo School of Fine Arts, for many years, nurturing many young artists. He also served as a judge for the Teiten exhibition, and is known as a leading figure in the modern Japanese art world.
